#166) BREAKING NEWS! ;-) “2019 Librascope Reunion Photos Are Now On YouTube”.

On October 12th last year a special Librascope Reunion was held at the request of 92 year old Bonnie Granger, Supervisor of Circuit Board  Assembly, who retired in 1992. Normally, Librascope reunions are held every two years, but Bonnie explained to Georgine Archer that she was getting old and missed seeing her old friends. 

About three dozen people attended the "special" reunion, which was again held at The Federal Bar in North Hollywood. It was Librascope’s 12th Reunion since Lockheed Martin announced the closing of the Glendale Operation in 1997. 

In retrospect, it was good that the reunion was held a year early, since it currently seems unlikely there will be a 2020 reunion. All during the get together, Georgine and my wife, Gloria, took lots of candid photographs. Unfortunately, the lighting was poor, but fortunately we were able to retouch most of the photos and publish them as a short video slideshow on YouTube. To view the 4 minute video, CLICK HERE.

A rare Librascope Model LC-1 Balance Computer has just been listed on ebay for $875.00! A detailed writeup of this seller's same Balance Computer was first posted July 31, 2013 on Blog Post #86: Click Here

"1943 Librascope Balance Computer for the Glenn L. Martin PBM-3C Mariner Series Flying Boat. Model LC-1, S/N 662. Missing the original wooden fabric covered case, but otherwise complete and functional. Extremely rare mechanical computer. Very few were manufactured and fewer yet survive today.

Just one of a complete collection of Load Adjusters I am selling for the Martin PBM and P5M series seaplanes from 1937 to 1967."

#164) Att'n: All LibraVets Who Retired Around 1995.

It has come to our attention that the small group of LibraVets who retired around 1995 and received a special severance/pension package, probably received an incorrect Lockheed-Martin (L-M) 2019 “non-qualified” W2 recently. L-M’s Pension Department is aware of the problem, so those LibraVets affected may soon receive a corrected W2. Unfortunately, L-M would not provide us with the names of all those affected due to privacy concerns, so we’re having to post this notice on our Blog for “All Libravets” to read. If you are in this group, and you do not soon receive a corrected W2, you should contact L-M’s Pension Department before filing your 2019 tax returns.

For information on how best to contact L-M’s Pension Department, whether you soon receive a corrected W2 or not, please contact Ralph Simon ASAP. This small group of LibraVet retirees has experienced many L-M pension payment related problems in the past, and some of those problems may repeat in the future. Ralph has offered to share his past pension problem experiences, and any new information he has learned, with all those who contact him. It's important though to contact him now.

#163) This News Blog Is Now 9 Years Old!

2010 to 2019 - 163 Posts of Librascope Memories...

9 years ago this month this Librascope Memories - News Blog published its first post, announcing that, so far, there were over 100 reservations for the 2010 Reunion. The new Blog's purpose was to provide a free platform for communicating news of interest to Librascope's many retirees on a timely basis. A Blog format was chosen, because it's easier and quicker to publish the news, compared to a conventional website. BTW, our Librascope Memories website celebrated its 10 year anniversary earlier this year (See Post #160).

Since 2009 there have been over 96,500 pageviews of this Blog from all over the world, including Korea, Canada, Taiwan, Germany, Mexico, France, China, India, Australia, and a few others! During this time, we've covered many subjects, including Librascope Reunions, Librascope surplus equipment sought or for sale, "Has Beens" get togethers, announcements of new additions to the Librascope Memories website, and sadly the Passing of many Libravets. #162) Photos of the 2018 Reunion are (finally) on YouTube!!!

On October 13, 2018 several Libravets and their guests gathered for Librascope's eleventh bi-annual employee reunion since Lockheed Martin announced Librascope's closing and the relocation of its business to Manassas, Virginia in the late 1990's.

The Reunion was held at The Federal Bar in North Hollywood, and included a delicious buffet luncheon. As always, it was an opportunity to renew old friendships, drink some beer, and reminisce for hours.

#160) Happy 10th Anniversary “Librascope Memories”.

10 years ago, on April 28th 2009, the Librascope Memories web-site was published on the Internet at https://librascopememories.com using the iWeb program on my, new at the time, 2008 MacBook. The initial goal was to make the 300+ Librazettes, issued by the Company since 1942, available for anyone to view and/or search. Over the past ten years, numerous other Librascope memorabilia have also been added to the “new” web-site, including:

1) Photo Albums (14) with many (445) photos taken at the Librascope Reunions since 1999. Note, the 2016 and 2018 reunion photos are yet to be added. The 2016 Reunion photos, however, are now viewable from Blog Post #144 (which links to a video slideshow on YouTube).
2) Various Librascope “Videos” (9), including two Librascope Promo’s, the 1992 and 1996 Christmas Parties, and two Retirements.
3) 47 photos of several “Librascope Products” from the past.
4) Copies of 69 “Librascope Literature” sheets since 1938!
5) A photo album that includes an odd assortment of “Libravet Personnel” photos (56).
6) Ten “Sea Stories” written by Libravets about their various Librascope experiences.

#158) The Names of Many Libravets Are Now On Mars!

Thanks to JPL and Lockheed Martin, the "Mars InSight Lander" landed successfully yesterday on the surface of Mars! In addition to all its scientific instrumentation, it carried the engraved names of the many Librascope Memories - News Blog readers who signed up last year. See Blog Post #152 dated October 10, 2017.

#157) Jay Wilcox - A Voice from the Past

As presidents go, I was a blip on the proud 60+ year history of Librascope. It was late 1992, the Cold War was over, defense was consolidating, and I was sent on my first CEO assignment - to guide you into the Loral family. Instead, you brought me into the Librascope family. While I remember some buzz words of the day like BSY-2 and MICAD, I most remember the talented and warm people I got to know in Glendale - technical, operational, and management alike.

About two days before your October 13th reunion, I jumped online and found I could get there in time from my Ohio home, but getting back would involve an all-nighter. No big deal in 1993, but my now 70-year-old body just doesn’t do red-eyes the way it used to. So, I’m sorry I missed the reunion, but trust you all had a great time reminiscing.

After leaving Glendale in 1993, I stayed with Loral in Akron, Ohio and moved on to Eagan, Minnesota after the Loral merger with Lockheed. In late 2000, I joined the former Loral executive team at L-3 Communications. I served as president of divisions in Philadelphia and Leesburg, Virginia before retiring in 2011. My bride of 20 years, Barbara, and I are enjoying retirement in Columbus, Ohio with our children and grandchildren nearby. With some better planning, perhaps we can both join you for your next reunion. Meanwhile, we toast all of you proud Libravets!

#152) Want NASA to Leave Your Name On Mars?

Perhaps for public relations purposes, NASA has set up a website where you can easily sign up to have your name placed on a tiny microchip and sent to Mars next year. It will fly aboard the InSight spacecraft built by Lockheed Martin. In addition, if you also sign up for NASA’s “frequent flyer” program, they will credit your account for the 33.9 million miles travelled to Mars, including any future flights you may sign up for.

The next mission to Mars; i.e., the InSight Mars Lander, will launch in May, 2018 and land on Mars in November next year. Its mission is to study the interior of Mars and listen for Mars quakes.

The InSight lander is being built at Lockheed Martin Space Systems in Denver. In the attached photo, a spacecraft specialist in a clean room, affixes a dime-size chip onto the lander deck. This chip will carry all the names submitted online by the public from all over the world.

Applicants who opt to include their email address will become a “Frequent Flyer”. NASA will then automatically keep track of all the missions you participate in. They will also store copies of all your boarding passes, and notify you whenever new flight opportunities become available.

To put your name on the “passenger list”, simply Click Here and type it in. Note, press #4 at the top of this NASA website to learn more about Mars and the InSight.

IMPORTANT - The last day to submit your name is Wednesday, November 1, 2017. To date, about two million “passengers” have signed up.

#151) The October “Has Beens” Luncheon - Photos

Several Librascope “Has Beens” gathered this past week to discuss both current events and past experiences. These periodic get togethers started about twenty years ago, a few years before Librascope moved to Manassas, VA!

Attending this luncheon were Gus Montes, Ralph Simon, Georgine Archer, Don Tubbs (and his son), Don Barton, Steve Lebit, Earl Valdez, Carol Wong, Shep Girion, "AJ" Pankratz, Dan Sibley, Emery Fekety, Larry Knowles, Bill Tilden, and Gloria & Carl Sorensen (camera shy).

BTW, Georgine mentioned off-line that she would like to have the next Has Beens luncheon in April, followed by our bi-annual Reunion in October or early November. Comments?

#150) Our U.S. Navy’s “Boomer” Submarines

The U.S. Navy’s fleet of 18 “Boomer” submarines, a.k.a. Fleet Ballistic Missile (FBM) submarines, are the most feared weapon on earth. Recently, several impressive photos of these Ohio Class submarines were compiled and distributed. This collection is presented here in the form of a video slideshow for easy viewing.

My thanks to Don Barton for forwarding these photos. BTW, Don was the Program Manager for the mass memories that were installed in each of these FBM subs Integrated Radio Room.

#148) Roy Dean Bartlome, 1928 - 2017

Roy Bartlome, a long time Libravet known by all, has passed away. Roy's daughter, Laurie, kindly sent us an advance copy of his obituary which will appear in the LA Times' Glendale News Press tomorrow (Wednesday). A reproduction follows:

Roy Dean Bartlome, 89, of Glendale, California passed away on Sunday, July 30, 2017. Born in 1928 in Montpelier, Idaho to Fred and Lena Bartlome, he was one of eight children. Although raised in Idaho, he spent most of his adult life in the Los Angeles, California area.

Roy graduated from the University of California at Los Angeles with a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering and, in 1952, earned his Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering. Beginning in 1956, he dedicated his professional life to aerospace at Librascope (Singer Corporation) based in Glendale, California. He led a distinguished career in program management as Director of Naval Weapon Systems until he retired as Vice President of Navy Modernizations Programs in 1991.

Roy was a loving and devoted husband to his wife, Patricia, until her death in 2009. He was a proud father of his only daughter, Laurie Brighton, of Sydney, Australia, and adoring of his companions in later life, Burton Johnson and Kelly Cassidy. He is survived by them and by his brothers, Gordon and James Bartlome of Utah, and by his sisters, Helen Portela and Linda Aland of Idaho, as well as by many loving nieces, nephews and dear long-term friends.

In Roy’s own words, he felt “gifted to have lived his life with honor, courage, laughter and love.”

A celebration of his life will be held at the Hillside Chapel, Gate 17, Rose Hills Memorial Park, Whittier, California on Wednesday, August 9 at 3 p.m., followed by a graveside service.

#147) Robert "Bob" Chambers, 1935 - 2016

The other day, Georgine Archer unexpectedly discovered Bob Chambers’ obituary in the May 2, 2016 issue of The Record-Courier, serving Minden-Gardnerville & Carson Valley, NV.

As most Libravets know, Bob was a very highly regarded systems engineer at Librascope who made many important contributions. In 1989, for example, he was the AN/BSY-2 Program Director. See page 2 of the December 22, 1989 Librazette (click here).

Bob's 2016 obituary follows:

Robert "Bob" Chambers, long-time resident of Gardnerville, Nevada, passed away at home on Friday, April 1, 2016. Bob and his wife Brenda moved to Gardnerville in 2001 from June Lake, California. Bob loved the Sierras and his new home in Gardnerville. He became active in the community as a member of the Douglas County Library Board and as President and Treasurer of Friends of the Library. Bob was born in Los Angeles, California on May 26, 1935 and lived most of his life in Burbank before retiring to June Lake in 1997. He was a graduate of UCLA and had an MBA from Pepperdine University. Bob was a consummate engineer and spent his entire working career of more than 30 years with Singer- Librascope in Glendale.California. After retiring to June Lake, Bob became involved in various community projects including the June Lake Water Board, the Mono County Library, and Friends of the Bodie Railroad. Bob's smile, energy and hugs will be missed by family and friends. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Brenda, son Richard (Pamela) of Downey, California, grandchildren Jamie Chambers of Minden, Jeffrey Chambers of Simi Valley, California and Steven Chambers of Huntington Beach, California. Bob was preceded in death by granddaughter Bridget Chambers. Bob will also be missed by former daughter-in-law Terri Chambers of Minden and step grandchildren Stacey Tauson of Los Angeles and Stephanie Tauson of Downey, California. A memorial event will be planned for a later date. Arrangements were in the trusted care of Autumn Funerals & Cremations.

PS - Bob’s wife, Brenda, passed away December 3, 2016. She was 82 years old.
